October 31, 2003 for Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley
Fishing is good. Catfishing in the lakes is excellent.
The channel catfish are feeding close to the shore, early and late.
During the day channels and blues are hitting very good along the
deeper creek and the old river channels. Shad gut and leeches are
the better baits. Most of
the fish are at 25' to 30' during the day. The blues are running
big. Crappie are scattered around 10' to 12' brush. Jigs presented
vertical are catching as well as minnows floated over the brush.
Sauger are hitting good in the lakes around the dams. Barkley tail
waters are also
producing good sauger. Since the river levels are back to normal,
good hybrid catches are being taken from both rivers downstream
from the dams. Bluegill are good along the deep shores and around
the docks. Crickets and small Mepps are catching well. Largemouth
are hitting topwater late in the evening. The best fall fishing
is just starting. The water temp is 66 degrees. I will be phesant
hunting next week and there will not be a report.
October 23/03 for Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley
Crappie fishing is spotty. Most are still being caught under bobbers
with minnows fished over the brush. Most are being caught early
and late. Largemouth are in about 4' of water in the bays. The shad
are active in the bays and largemouths are chasing them late in
the evening.
Lake Barkley seems to be producing better this week. Catfishing
for blue cat in Kentucky Lake has been very good. Live yellowtails
fished along the main river channel has been producing some good
catches. The channel catfish are feeding close to shore along the
deep banks. The tail waters of both dams has the better fishing.
Sauger and strippers are being
caught below Barkley Dam. Good stripers have also been caught below
Kentucky Dam. Sauger are hitting live baits fished off the bottom.
Mister Twister Sassy Shad are the better baits for the stripers.
Bluegill are active in shallow water.
