July 31 , 2006 in Nootka Sound
The salmon and halibut fishing in Nootka Sound right now is hot, hot, hot. Most everywhere is producing salmon on anchovie, spoons, and cutplug herring. Hootchies are also working in glow in the dark whites. The most popular spots out front are: Beano Creek, Burdwood Point, Lighthouse, Maquinna, and Wash Rock. The most popular spots inside are: Beer Can Bay, Hisnit, San Carlos and The Wall.
The largest salmon to date is 47 pounds caught at Maquinna on an anchovie set up.
Halibut fishing is very good at depths of 130-180 feet using squid or artificial jigs. Start at Maquinna and head out two miles plus due south or more depending on catch. Keep moving with the tide and try new areas frequently. Remember to keep those rod tips up and tight lines!
