Caribou/Chilcotin Region

map of the caribou-chilcotin region of British Columbia Canada

The Caribou-Chilcotin area is one of the most beautiful regions in British Columbia settled by ranchers as early as the late 1800's.

The area encompasses a very large region ( 80,000 sq km) from Bridge Lake in the east to Bella Coola in the west and Lytton in the south then Quesnel in the north.

The population of this region is approximately 70,000 and is known for its beautiful landscapes, large number of lakes and fascinating history.

There are over 8,000 lakes and roughly 17,000 rivers and streams in the Caribou Chilcotin region to choose from that offer fishing opportunities for every type of freshwater angler.

The appropriately named "Fishing Highway" that runs from Little Fort (hwy 24) to the Hwy 97 junction about 7 km south of 100 Mile House has access to over 100 lakes within an hours drive.

Most of these lakes support a healthy population of freshwater shrimp which feed Rainbow Trout that sometimes reach 12 pounds or more.

The other well known highway in the Caribou Chilcotin region is hwy 20 (Chilcotin Highway) that runs 457 km from Williams Lake to Bella Coola.

This highway boasts North America's steepest public highway winding some 10 miles and dropping more than 4000 feet from Heckman Pass.

Some of the more popular spots to fish are Anahim Lake, Atnarko River, Chaunigan Lake, Chilcotin River, Chilko Lake, Eagle Lake, Nimpo Lake, Nemaiah Valley, Puntzi Lake, Taseko Lakes, Tatla Lake, and Turner Lake to name a few.

There are many, many more lakes to explore in this vast region that also includes the Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park and the Chilcotin Plateau.

Chaunigan Lake Lodge

Beautiful Chaunigan Lake in Chilcotin country

Comments: Chaunigan Lake Lodge started as a fishing lodge in 1935 and history has proven that our greatest asset, after scenery, is our wild rainbow trout fishing.

Our careful management and remote location has preserved our world-class rainbow trout lake fishing.

The average fish size is 2 1/2 pounds. There are many days when experienced fly fishermen will catch 50 fish a day.

In addition to the main lake we have boats on several walk- in lakes and easy access to stream fishing.

For a change of pace try one of the 6 fly-in fishing lakes within a 70 mile radius of Chaunigan Lake.

All these remote lakes are equipped with boats.

There's an adventure for everyone!

Experience flyfishing, fresh water fishing, hiking, nature trails, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking and much more.
